Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, I began my teaching career in Southern California. Many children came to class desperately requiring new, proper fitting running shoes in order to play and learn comfortably. Realizing that there had to be many more children in need of help, I began to research ways to make a difference in their lives. Thankfully, I found Shoes That Fit, a non-profit organization in California, that matches organizations willing to provide new running shoes for children in need with schools having a needy population. I became involved, organizing many shoe drives over the next few years that supplied shoes for hundreds of children.

Recently, I moved back to Winnipeg with my husband and children. I quickly realized that children here have an even greater need. Not only do they require running shoes, they also must have warm winter boots to get them to school and allow them to play safely through winter.

Fortunately, soon after my move, I met Laura Lomow, a woman just as passionate about the needs of our children. We quickly reached out to the community asking for help and were thrilled with the response. We were able to provide running shoes and winter boots to hundreds of children in 2010. It was evident that this effort should be expanded to reach the thousands of children in our province. To make this possible More Than Shoes was born in 2011!

From its very inception, the community has embraced this project and nurtured its development. Winnipeg Harvest has generously offered temporary storage space, assistance with deliveries and the ability to issue tax receipts for monetary donations. The Winnipeg Foundation encouraged us to apply for a grant for operating expenses so that all money raised through donations can be used for the purchase of shoes and boots for our children. Together we are working to ensure that every child has the chance to wear new, properly fitted footwear.
